There are more than 200 shrines devoted to Lord Shiva in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand itself, the most important one is Kedarnath. According to mythology, after the victory over the Kauravas in the Battle of Kurukshetra, the Pandavas felt guilty for killing their own Kith and Kin and sought Shiva's blessing for their release. He repeatedly forbade them and took refuge in Kedarnath in the form of buffaloes while fleeing.
After following, the Lord plunged into the ground, leaving his curls on the surface of Kedarnath. The remains of Shiva appeared in 4 other places and are worshiped there as his manifestation. The Lord's arms appeared in Tungnath, Rudranath's face, Madameshwar's belly, and Kalpeshwar with his lock (hair) head. Kedarnath and the four shrines mentioned above are considered as Panch Kedar (Panch meaning five in Sanskrit).
The temple at Kedarnath offers a breathtaking view, standing in the middle of a wide plateau surrounded by high snow-capped peaks. The temple was originally built by Jagad Guru Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD and stands adjacent to an earlier temple built by the Pandavas. The interior walls of the assembly hall are decorated with images of various deities and scenes from the Puranas. Outside the temple, gates stand a huge statue of Nandi Buffalo as a guard.
